i did yoga and i liked itttttt

last night, i went to my very first yoga class.

let’s just let that sink in for a second, mmmkay? because for me, that’s a pretttty big deal.Β  talk about facing your fitness fears/doing something totally out of your comfort zone — that’d be yoga, in my world.

i honestly had no idea what to expect, and as i’ve shared before, i was prettttty sure i’d resemble something along these lines:

thankfully, it wasn’t half that bad. as in, i felt pretty amazing and like i could totally get the hang of this and enjoy it as a complement to my running.

one of my bestest friends is really into yoga and has been so amazingly consistent in encouraging me to try a class with her for the past, errr, six months or so, and she took me to a Foundations class last night at Om Factory in Midtown. annnnd it was pretty darn awesome.

i’ve read quite a few other bloggers’ posts recently about “facing their fitness fears,” and i think yoga was about as close to a fitness fear for me as i’ve experienced in a while. it was more of the complete uncertainty surrounding it, worrying that i’d feel so silly in a room with a bunch of amazing yogis who know all the pose names and have these super flexible hips and hamstrings which my runner’s legs can only cry about.

and, like, om symbols and lotus flowers tattooed all over them and be way, way cooler than i am.

in all honesty, i think i stayed out of a yoga studio for months because i was just so darn sure that i’d be that bad at it. and if you know me, you know that’s something i struggle with: i hate being bad at things. it’s not even that i’m super competitive with other people (okay so mayyyyyybe a little sometimes) — i just get really hard on myself. i should be able to run faster. i should be able to spin better in salsa. i should just naturally be an amazing yogi, because i like planks. and yoga pants.

when in reality, we need the learning curve. we need new challenges and new opportunities to grow; new ways to push ourselves both mentally and physically; new feats to embrace and ways to move ourselves forward. we cannot all be amazing at everything the first time, and there’s so much to learn from the journey.

so what if i wasn’t doing any headstands or weird animal-named poses or touching my toes to the back of my head (seriously people, join the circus. right, i’m just jealous)…

i still felt so good and so accomplished just trying something new, and stretching myself (pun intended?) in a different way. it was nothing like the workouts i’m used to, but it was still strenuous at times and definitely enjoyable and challenged me, which is all i can ask for.

and every time she said to get into plank position, my little heart rejoiced. at least i’ve got that one down, without having to see what Alex was doing beside me. me and planks are super tight.

i definitely enjoyed myself and would go back in a heartbeat. it wasn’t half as intimidating as i expected and made me very conscious of how i was using my body. i’m not as self-aware when i’m running, as i am so used to it and just zone out with my music on and go for miles, whereas with this, i was totally focused on the lines of my body and how i was breathing and just being present with myself. and that was a really nice, unexpected change of pace.

so yay for yoga class #1 being tucked away behind me! already looking forward to the next.

  1. Yay for facing your fears and going to yoga!! I did the same thing this past December when I attended a yoga class for the first time. While I’m not obsessed with yoga (i.e. you won’t see me getting a teaching cert anytime soon), I found that it complements my running in extraordinary ways, the main ones being physical alignment of my entire body (I have weak hips & scoliosis) and ultimate stretching. I hope you continue to go…I think you’ll quickly discover how great it is for you as a runner!

    P.S – I have no idea where to buy cute yoga pants! I just always wear my plain black Lulu WunderUnders, so I need some suggestions too.

    • thanks, and glad to hear another runner who can relate to the “i want to do yoga but it’s so foreign to me” thing. πŸ™‚ i look forward to trying it out more. and i’ll keep you posted if i find some good yoga gear!

  2. I can totally relate – “fitness fear” is what’s been keeping me out of my new gym’s classes. I had gotten so used to the ones at my old gym that I don’t remember what it was like to be the new girl in a class and have no idea what’s going on. Glad you had such a great experience! Maybe I’ll get into a new class soon πŸ˜‰

    • good look facing the new class fears and i’m sure you will rock them! i just tell myself, everyone here was new at one point, and teachers love seeing new faces. πŸ™‚

  3. I’m a huge yogi and I start yoga teacher certification in October!! I’m so excited!! Yoga is THE BEST!! It doesn’t get any better than that!!! Flexibility, stamina, etc!! Love it!!

  4. I just picked yoga back up this past week too! I took some classes before, but never really stuck to it, but I think it will really help complement my running so I picked it back up. One “fitness fear” I’m hoping to overcome this summer is paddleboarding – I lack balance and am not the best swimmer, so we’ll see how that goes…

  5. Athleta for yoga pants. Tell Lulu to suck it. Athleta all the way (in terms of readily accessible store, rather than boutique brands). I’m obsessed with their plie pants (the longer ones–I like them for working on inversions and things where sweaty skin has to rest on sweaty skin (slip factor) and also because they help to keep your internal heat up (and thus get more into things). I would say that I am fitness adverse to Crossfit (because I hate plyos and things that involve quick movement). A fitness fear of mine would be certain aspects of biking/cycling. I love it, and I’m decent at it, but I’ve never had enough practice/work to take on the road bike. I will spin my legs off, but I’m not so sure about the whole mobile thing. I also hate cold water. And I want to do a tri sometime. We shall see….
    And luge/skeleton. Def a fitness fear. Not gonna happen.

    • haha i’d def never do the skeleton/luge either — a guy at work shattered his hand doing it this year and it scares the bejeeeezus out of me. i actually love anything plyo/quick movements! and i def mean to swim more often too. thx for the Athleta tip!

  6. Ohhh man, I love yoga. I fell in love when I took a class at my local college when I was 19 and I never looked back. I go at least twice a week to a class, and have started doing my own mini practices at home. SO glad you tried it and LOVED it! I find it to be a great addition to my running!

  7. Woo congrats! Ironically I’m going to a yoga class in a few hours too…my first one in some time. The best part about experienced yogis is that they’re some of the most focused and least judgmental people on the planet, so no one notices/cares if you go there and are terrible. It’s all about you and what you can handle. Glad you liked it!

  8. I know going to your first class can be so nervewracking (I remember that feeling haha), but just remember that no one there cares what you look like! That’s my favorite thing about yoga. It’s so personal and it never gets stale. I’m on my 6th year now. πŸ™‚

  9. My fitness fear? Swimming. Ummm. No. No thanks. I’m a cannonballer, not a swimmer. Which is sad because running and cycling? No sweat, My Pet. I love ’em. But swimming?!? Gah. I love, LOVE yoga and I definitely need more of it in my life. Love the awareness it brings. πŸ™‚

  10. I love your honesty in your posts, Shawna! One of my girlfriends talked me into trying a barre class recently and it definitely made me sweat. Have you tried those?
