2 Things Tuesday

peace copy
ONE:
running. annnd just like that, i’m baaack outdoors, for the win! stoked to report that my last two runs were outside:

Saturday: 8.5 hilly miles upstate (this was a tough one — my legs were so tired)
Monday (last night): 5 balmy miles along the West Side Highway, in near-50 degree weather!! booyah. this one felt amazing.

i was struggle-city all day yesterday — Monday-ing like whoa — and was fairly confident a run wasn’t in the books for me. i went home from work, took an hour nap, and forced myself to the gym for a half hour of weights/strength — and that was all it took to wake me up and make me crave the outdoors. i figured i’d just pop out a couple of miles, 3 tops…but i felt sooooo alive and wonderful and thrilled to be outdoors on the nicest night of 2015 thus far in NYC, that 5 miles flew by. don’t you just love it when that happens??

TWO: reading. i read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes this weekend on my train rides to and from upstate. i really enjoyed this book: i found it an easy, quick read, with an engaging storyline and a likeable main character, driven by a very complex, poignant relationship. characterization is so important for me in a novel: if i don’t like my narrator or care about her fate, i have a hard time really losing myself in the story or becoming invested. i thought this was nicely written, heartfelt, and genuine, albeit a bit hard as well, as it deals with some serious life issues. it’s one of those books that made me feel so utterly grateful for my life, while simultaneously inspiring me to want to do more, see more, experience alllll the things.

  1. Awesome hearing about your outdoor runs!! The weather has been amazing lately!! Yaay for that!! I loved getting back outdoors!! There is absolutely nothing like it! Way to rock out 2 amazing runs!! Have a GREAT day! Nice job! XOXO

  2. Yay for running outside again! Sounds like you had some fun with that. I saw so many people running on Riverside on Monday after work. It made me so happy to see everyone embracing the amazing weather!

    • i know, it’s the best to see the river paths full of runners again! there were quite a few times this winter when i’d pass, like, 3 other runners, and it made me so sad. NYC needs to come to life again with the Spring!

  3. I’m sooo excited that it’s been nicer out! I’ve been running outside this whole horrible winter, but when it’s nicer out it’s much easier. I feel like I could stay out forever!

I’m currently reading “My Sister’s Grave”. It’s so good so far! I love a good mystery/thriller and this one’s been a quick read so far.

  4. I took like a solid week off of running, and my first run back was an ugly struggle. I was sick that week, so that was partially why. I’m not settling into daily/shorter runs. Perhaps not the best before race weekend, but YOLO!

  5. I have actually had time to read lately (IT’S CRAZY!) and I’m going to check that book out! It sounds great! Hooray for outdoor running and awesome runs that go by fast and make your day! It’s kind of weird making the transition back outside, but I feel so much more upbeat knowing that it’s going to keep getting warmer and warmer. πŸ™‚

  6. I am loving everything by Liane Moriarity. My two favorites by her are The Husband’s Secret and Little Big Lies. So good. I have to check out your book rec as soon as I finish the one I’m on. I love to read so I’m always on the lookout for good books!

    • i read Little Big Lies this winter — it was a quick, fun read with some great characters and definitely dealt with some rough issues. i haven’t read Husband’s Secret but one of my girlfriends raved about it too, so i’ll have to check it out. let’s exchange recs, b/c i’m always looking for good ones, too! we could do a virtual book club! πŸ™‚

  7. Glad to hear you are able to get back outdoors for some runs Shawna! I know running around the NYC is therapy for you lol πŸ˜‰ and the weather here …… ummmm … let’s just say summer has already made its way to Florida mmmkay … I went for a run at 5am today … 5am!!! It was a hot, humid, soupy, sauna outside and by the time I was done with my run I looked more like I went swimming than running … ugh :/

    • ughhh noooo, sweaty humid early morning runs are rough. 😦 sorry to hear it’s that bad there already, Lee. we are having some lovely weather (50s!) so i’d send you some if i could!

  8. Isn’t it amazing how our best running moments can happen when we least expect them to? I have struggled a little lately to get out the door, but as soon as I suck it up and get outside, I feel alive and energized. I remind myself of that all the time – because the struggle is real. ☺

Have you read any of her other books? I have seen these books around, but have never taken the time to really learn of what they are about. I bet you have a lot of time to read when you are traveling around?
