23 miles feels oh so good

..especially when it’s over. 🙂

i’m so flippin’ ridiculously happy about this run. it’s the longest run i’ve ever done aside from my only full marathon to date (which was two Octobers ago), and to be perfectly honest, it went amazingly. as in, the day was beautiful, i was well-rested, and i felt really, really good.

i set out with the goal of running 20 miles this morning. it’d been on my mind all week, as i knew that i had to have a successful 20-miler in today to feel confident enough to run the Mohawk Hudson Marathon in 3 weeks. my 17-miler last weekend didn’t feel as great as i wanted it to, so i was a bit uncertain of how this would go.

welp, it went smashingly (thank you, Jesus. seriously, i needed this!). so well that at 17, i decided i was going to run 21, so that i had more than 20 under my belt. at 21, i decided i wished my full marathon was today, as i still felt so good and pain-free! i remembered a friend from work who runs marathons and does triathlons on the regular told me a few weeks ago that “all you need is a three-and-a-half hour run under you to feel ready for the marathon.” welp, his words stuck, and i decided that was exactly what i was going to do.

so at 23, with that amount of time behind me (and zero walk breaks!), i decided i should stop because i didn’t want to overdo it (and really don’t need to run a full marathon before i, well, run a full marathon). but honestly, i felt like i could have done the whole thing today.

so thanks, beautiful Saturday in September in NYC. you were so, so good to me today, and i’m so, so grateful.

  1. It sounds like you are definitely ready to rock your marathon. If you were feeling good enough to continue running, even though it wasn’t “planned”, then that means your body and mind are in a good place. Enjoy the taper!!!

  2. AHHHHHHH AHHHHHH AHHHHHH YAS! I am so happy to see this and I am SO EXCITED FOR YOU. Also – I ran 23 yesterday too and it was my longest long run outside of a marathon! Twins! Should have met up and run together!
